NITROGEN
Nitrogen deficiency often appears first in older leaves and will look as light green which later turn to yellow color and drops off. Necrosis develops in older leaves. New growth becomes weak and spindly. Apical and root growth is poor. When plants are in the mid to later growth or flowering stages, older and large fan leaves may show nitrogen deficiency.
PHOSPHORUS
Phosphorus deficiency appear on older leaves first and show itself as patches that are dull dark green to bluish green. In severe cases, older leaf and petioles turn reddish purple.
Leaf tips curl downward and reduced growth is observed. Younger leaves have dark green veins and necrotic spots occur on leaf margins.
POTASSIUM
Potassium deficiency appears first in older leaves exhibiting yellowing or scorching of leaf margins and leaf tips. Brittle stems accompanied by withering; interveinal chlorosis starting at the base of young leaves. In vegetative stage plants develop slowly and are stunted. In bloom phase, flowers develop slowly and fail to achieve normal size.
CALCIUM
Calcium deficiency appears first in young leaves. Calcium deficiency shows brown and black colour and death of leaf tips, leaf edges, chlorosis and necrosis of new growing tips. Calcium deficiency can cause severe reduction in new growth and also results in abortion of flower and bud structures.
MAGNESIUM
Magnesium deficiency appears first in older leaves. The symptoms start from the margin and then inwards. The leaf mid-rib and veins remain green while leaf margins are yellow or whitish, sometimes leaving a green arrowhead shape in the centre of the blade. Chlorotic interveinal yellow patches can occur near leaf centers. In these cases, a leaf margin is the last to turn yellow and drops off.
SULPHUR
Deficiency appears on the youngest leaves first unlike nitrogen, turning them light green, then yellow accompanied by slow growth. Leaves lose color, but veins remain green. Sulphur deficiency causes small and spindly plants with short, slender stalks and reduced growth rate with delayed maturity.
ZINC
Zinc deficiency first shows interveinal chlorosis in young and mid-shoot leaves starting at leaf tip and margins and eventually affecting all growing points of the plant. Zinc deficiency also includes greyish brown spots on leaves, dormant & inactive shoots, short internodal distance and lesser grain weight.
IRON
Iron deficiency observed in younger leaves showing uniform light green chlorosis lighter than veins and older leaves remains unaffected. Leaves are smaller than normal and interveinal chlorotic mottling of immature leaves. In severe cases, new leaves lack chlorophyll but show little or no necrotic spots and the leaves will appear white including veins.
MANGANESE
Manganese deficiency is first observed on young leaves. They develop interveinal chlorosis and irregular mottling gradually along the leaf margins. The discoloration goes from light green to white, but veins remain green. The leaves become bronze-colored speck like and then die.
COPPER
Copper deficiency cause leaves at top of the plant to wilt first followed by chlorotic and necrotic areas on leaves and necrosis of the apical meristem (the center stem of the plant). Copper deficiency cause irregular growth and pale green leaves that wither at leaf margins. Leaves on top half of plant show unusual inward curling (cup like) with veinal chlorosis.
BORON
Boron deficiency show yellowing in younger leaves, stunting, discoloration, death of growing tips and floral abortion. Stunted appearance of the plants and short internodes (rosetting).
Stems may develop hollow, roughened or cracked. Cracking and dropping is observed in fruit and nuts.
MOLYBDENUM
Molybdenum deficiency appears in older and middle-aged leaves first and then appear in younger leaves but chlorosis symptoms similar to nitrogen deficiency are typical of molybdenum deficiency, along with scorching and strapping of leaf margins. New leaves may twist and leaves may cup and thicken.
